1922: Rebecca L. Felton, is appointed to the U.S. Senate by the governor of Georgia, becoming the nation's first female senator.
1943: In one of the deadliest fires in California history, 11 men, including nine Marines, died and more than 70 were injured as the Hauser Creek fire in the Cleveland National Forest charred more than 13,000 acres Oct. 2-3.
1960: “The Andy Griffith Show” premieres on television starring Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, Ron Howard as his son, Opie, and Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife.
