HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
CIF seeks more info on Poway

UNION-TRIBUNE

October 2, 2008

The executive committee of the California Interscholastic Federation's San Diego Section is seeking more information on issues recently raised about the Poway High baseball program.

Yesterday, the committee reviewed a letter from Poway in response to San Diego Section concerns about alleged undue influence in recruiting transfers, private lessons taught on school grounds by coaches and other issues.

A member of the committee declined to be specific about what information is being sought because the committee met in closed session. The matter is scheduled to be forwarded to the section Board of Managers for discussion later this month.

Poway officials previously said there had been pre-enrollment contact between assistant coaches and transfer players through coaches' private baseball businesses, but that players were not recruited to Poway.

Poway (31-6) won its second section title in three years in the spring.
