TEARFUL TRIUMPH

Twenty-year-old Australian Matthew Mitcham foiled China's bid to sweep the diving gold medals with a last-gasp victory in the men's platform final. Mitcham, the only openly gay male athlete competing in the Beijing Games – who returned to diving after retiring from the sport – burst into tears. “Everything, absolutely everything I have done, has been for this,” he said.

A SILVER MOMENT

Spain's David Cal, who had entered as the favorite in the single canoe 500-meter race yesterday, won the silver medal, but he gave it his all. Cal looked white and repeatedly threw up while collecting his medal during the awards ceremony.
