Athletes with San Diego connections competing in Beijing. (Olympic Training Center athletes in Chula Vista have OTC designation):

YESTERDAY

Baseball: INF Brian Barden (St. Augustine) had two key hits, including a home run, in U.S. win over Canada; pitchers Stephen Strasburg (SDSU) and Trevor Cahill (Vista) did not play.

Cycling: Sarah Hammer (Temecula) was defeated by Alison Shanks of New Zealand in women's individual pursuit elimination race.

Equestrian: Steffen Peters (San Diego) was fourth in the dressage individual grand prix special on his horse Ravel.

Marathon: Deena Kastor (OTC) had to pull out of the women's race after about 3.1 miles because of a foot injury.

Water polo: Layne Beaubien and Jesse Smith (both Coronado High) helped U.S. team to 7-5 win over Croatia.

Sailing: Graham Biehl (San Diego), crew on 470 class boat with skipper Stu McNay of Massachusetts), raced to a first, a sixth and a 23rd to sit in 13th place after 10 races. Andrew Campbell (San Diego) was 32nd in a Laser race and is in 16th place after five races. In two-man 49er, Tim Wadlow (Torrey Pines) and Chris Rast (San Diego) finished third, eighth and fourth and are in sixth place after 12 races.

Track and field: Trevell Quinley (OTC) was 19th in men's long jump qualifying (25-9¾); Ian Waltz (OTC) was 25th in discus qualifying (196-11).

TODAY

Sailing: Campbell (San Diego) in Lasers; Biehl racing in 470 class; Rast and Wadlow in 49er class.

Triathlon: Julie Swail Ertel (UCSD) in women's triathlon.

Track and field: Sheena Tosta (OTC) in women's 400 meter hurdles.

Water polo: Moriah van Norman (USDHS) in U.S. women's water polo game vs. TBA
