CHARGERS 3, DOLPHINS 3
Key Play: Chargers linebacker Matt Wilhelm's stop of Ronnie Brown for a gain of just two yards on the first play in which the Dolphins utilized the "Wildcat" offense that produced four touchdowns against the New England Patriots two weeks ago. Miami resorted to the direct snap to Brown four times in its opening drive against the Chargers, but didn't come close to scoring on any of them.
Key Stat:7:18. The amount of time the Chargers burned off the clock in taking the opening kickoff and marching to the Miami 16-yard line, resulting in a 34-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding. More notably, it marked the first time this season that the Chargers actually got off to a good start in a game.
Not in the box score: While every seat in Dolphin Stadium was filled the night before with college-football fans for the University of Miami-Florida State game, there were empty orange seats by the thousands throughout the house yesterday. Moreover, the Hurricanes and Seminoles had run roughshod on each other and the playing surface in a heavy rainstorm that lasted through much of the night, leaving the turf thinned and spongy for the Dolphins and Chargers. The rain is starting to fall again, too.
DOLPHINS 17, CHARGERS 3
Key Play: The Dolphins' go-ahead touchdown pass of 17 yards from Chad Pennington to Greg Camarillo doesn't happen if Miami doesn't burn a timeout to consider its options on fourth-and one at the Chargers' 22. The decision to have Ronnie Brown go up the middle was a good one, providing three yards and the necessary first down.
Key Stat: Three receptions, 51 yards. The quarterly production of unheralded Dolphins receiver Greg Camarillo, including two first-down catches and a 17-yard TD. Camarillo showed the kind of mettle that kept him around the Chargers for a couple years, primarily as a practice-squad player, before he was cut loose and signed by Miami.
Not in the box score: Ricky Williams may not be quite the tailback he used to be, but he's definitely got some fullback in him, as exhibited on the five-yard touchdown run by backfield mate Ronnie Brown on a direct-snap play. Crossing in front of Brown, but not getting a handoff, Williams continued on and came back into the picture to draw a bead on Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer. Even a glancing block by Williams was enough to open Brown's path to the endzone.
DOLPHINS 17, CHARGERS 10
Key Play:Having a heckuva time connecting with anybody, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers finally got the connection he needed, a 42-yard pass play that Vincent completed by outjumping cornerback Andre Goodman for a first down at the Miami 13. Two plays later, Chris Chambers made Rivers look good with a 17-yard TD catch, his feet dragging just inside the sideline.
Key Stat: 1. The first fumble recovery of rookie Jacob Hester's career, a turnover he caused himself by popping the ball out of kick returner Davone Bess' hands, giving San Diego the ball right back at the 25 after their touchdown.
Not in the box score: Confusion. Disorganization. On a key third-and-12 at the Chargers 33-yard line, Miami receiver Ted Ginn Jr. set up wide, but nobody was covering him and cornerback Antonio Cromartie wasn't even watching him as he broke across the line for the quick pass. Cromartie recovered in time to stop Ginn three yards short of the first down, but the defensive disarray was obvious.
DOLPHINS 17, CHARGERS 10
Key Play: If the ball gets over Miami safety Yeremiah Bell and into the hands of tight end Brandon Manumaleuna, the Chargers have a first down and continue towards a possible tying touchdown, but Bell leapt to bat away the third-and-seven pass inside the Miami 40 to force a punt with 5:55 remaining int he game.
Key Stat: Not only did Ronnie Brown masterfully handle the ball in the "Wildcat" offense, but his three-yard gain gave the Dolphins a key first down and put Brown over the 100-yard mark rushing.
Not in the box score: The sheer sense of futility that Rivers and the San Diego offense were having against a Dolphins pass defense that, statistically anyway, is just about the worst in the National Football League.
NICK CANEPA: To the thousands of fans who chose AC, to leave their chairs empty and not take their Sunday afternoon sauna in Dolphins Stadium, we salute your cool judgment.
Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa will be commenting on developments live online during the San Diego Chargers' game today against the Dolphins in Miami.
NICK CANEPA: While less than thrilled with the inconsistent play so far, he's quite content with the makeup of the team for the long haul, mentally as well as physically.
NICK CANEPA: It's not the same. This graveyard of lost pride and poise no longer could frighten a wide-eyed child. What remains of a once great Unholy Empire are ugly ruins.
TIM SULLIVAN: LaDainian Tomlinson's improving health could put an end to the debate over whether he or Darren Sproles should be getting the carries. Why can't they have both?
