OAKLAND – Members of an Oakland community group are demanding action from officials in slowing a wave of violence gripping the city.

About 100 people gathered in front of City Hall Tuesday night to confront city officials about a rash of recent killings.

With the Oakland City Council about to go on a nine-week recess, some community leaders want the mayor and council members to work through the recess on a plan to cut down on violence.

City officials say they have begun implementing parts of a violence prevention plan by deploying street outreach workers and adding more police officers to the department.

Tuesday's gathering comes after Oakland recorded its 74th homicide of the year.

Last year at this time, there had been 69 homicides in the city.
