MURRIETA – A 46-year-old Murrieta man who led police on a chase, crashing his van into three other vehicles with a 12-year-old boy riding in the back, was in custody Tuesday, awaiting arraignment.
Kevin Ellis, booked at the Southwest Detention Center, is set to be arraigned Wednesday on charges, including child endangerment, burglary and petty theft, according to court and sheriff's records.
Ellis was wanted on an misdemeanor warrant when he was arrested, but what crimes the warrant alleges were unavailable.
Police tried to stop the van for an unspecified traffic violation shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, but Ellis sped away, ran a stop sign and crashed into another vehicle at Alta Murrieta Drive and Whitewood Road, said Murrieta Sgt. Julie Hoxmeier.
The chase continued for about 12 minutes, as Ellis crashed into two other vehicles, one at Rancho California Road and Interstate 15, the other at Winchester Road and Jefferson Avenue, Hoxmeier said.
Speeds reached about 80 mph on the freeway and 60 mph on surface roads, Hoxmeier said.
The chase ended at Jefferson Avenue and Larchmont Lane, the sergeant said, and police found the adolescent boy in the back of the van.
Ellis was locked up, and bail was set at $59,999, records show.
